Southeast Europe Network: Core Group "Sustainable Mobility"

Review of the meeting on 14 June 2021

On 14th of June the last session from the dedicated Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) presentation cycle has taken place as a part of the Sustainable Mobility working group activity. During the session the representatives of Kutaisi, Georgia presented their SUMP development progress to the core group members, providing participants a chance to take a closer look into their unique approach to the project development process.

Since the city of Kutaisi is in the transitional phase, preparing to accommodate an international university with hundreds of students who will be living on site and who will frequently travel through the international airport which is also based in the municipality, the municipality needs to come up with a mobility plan that will allow the city to continue functioning smoothly.

The main topics covered by Mr. Karkashadze during the presentation were the SUMP and city master plan development, envisaged pilot projects and the newly established municipal transport company.

The presentation was followed by a Q&A session during which representatives of Lviv, Tbilisi and Krusevac were able to pose their questions regarding aspects of participation of governmental bodies and private and civic sectors in the planning processes as they are the institutions mediating public opinion and local action trends. Other inquired topics included traffic safety, parking spaces, speeding on roads and noise pollution.

Program

This virtual event was moderated by Mr. Felix Richter, Managing Director of Kompetus Management Consulting GmbH, presenting the agenda and giving floor to Mr. Irakli Karkashadze, presenting the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of Kutaisi.

Results

During this meeting representatives of four municipalities concluded the process of acquainting each other with the SUMPs which they are developing. These served as ground for mutual understanding and exchange of ideas regarding the preparatory processes.

As a next step the Sustainable Mobility Core Group will continue working on thematic topics relevant for them from August 2021 (tentative).  Following workshops will feature relevant international examples on preselected topics. In order to support continuous communication among one another and as a place for mutual exchange group participants were provided with a dedicated group on the Connective Cities Platform https://community.connective-cities.net/en/group/103/stream. This virtual space will allow every interested network representative to access relevant resources as well as to stay in touch. Every interested city representative will be welcomed to the group upon request.
