Local Project Planning Workshop

Improving the Urban Physical Framework Plan of Cebu Metropolitan Region towards Transit-Oriented Development

From March, 13-15, 2017, the international community of practice for sustainable urban development, Connective Cities, will organise a Local Project Planning Workshop on “Improving the Urban Physical Framework Plan of Cebu Metropolitan Region towards Transit-Oriented Development” in Cebu, Philippines.

The upcoming March event is geared specifically towards supporting the review and upgrading of the Urban Physical Framework Plan of Cebu Metropolitan Region, comprising 13 individual cities with a total of 2.6 million inhabitants, towards the incorporation of transit-oriented development strategies and a specific focus on sustainable urban mobility concepts. Local participants include representatives of different stakeholder groups, such as local government and administration, economy, civil society, and academia who are contributing their know-how and expertise to identify the underlying challenges in the urban and regional context. German urban practitioners from municipalities, particularly from metropolitan regions, are asked to provide first-hand experience on practical approaches and proven solutions to Transit-Oriented Development and Sustainable Urban Mobility.

The workshop is structured into three steps: In a first session, international participants from Germany present good practices of transit oriented development strategies and sustainable urban mobility, providing an overview of applied solutions and illustrating respective preconditions, success factors and outcomes. The second part aims at analysing the specific local conditions in the Cebu metropolitan region and identifying actual challenges. The analysis is based upon short inputs on spatial, environmental, social and economic issues which will be prepared and presented by local participants. In a peer-to-peer advisory session, colleagues will diagnose, discuss and advise on the presented issues in order to help detect potential solutions. In a third step, all participants will work on recommendations for action focusing on specific aspects of transit oriented development and sustainable urban mobility which later will be incorporated in the ongoing planning process of Cebu metropolitan region.
