Sustainable mobility – Combination of future-proof mobility forms

The global transition towards sustainable transportation is essential for a sustainable future. Experts agree: there is no one-size-fits-all solution for sustainable mobility. Instead, we must create public transport services that include a range of mobility solutions and combine them in the best possible way – in a smart, accessible, and time- and resource-efficient manner. In addition, measures must be tailored very individually to the needs of citizens in individual regions, cities, counties, or municipalities. For strategic planning, German municipalities often develop concepts across regions in collaboration with transport and special-purpose associations. Innovative solutions and considerations for connecting transport are particularly reflected in concepts for mobility, tourism, or strategic regional development. In the Global South, municipalities are often challenged by urbanization and increasing traffic volumes to formulate solutions for developing their communities, and are increasingly relying on digital solutions and private providers.

The dialogue event marks the start of a one-year learning process in which participating municipalities are also invited to take part in further optional activities.

Objectives of the event

The event brings together experts from cities, counties, and municipalities and supports international expert exchange on the interaction of sustainable forms of mobility.

Goals for participants

  • Learn about innovative mobility solutions and how to combine them in a smart way
  • Compare strategic approaches and instruments for sustainable mobility in cities and surrounding areas
  • Acquire skills to solve challenges in the implementation of planned measures, drawing on an extended network and the method of peer consultation
  • In addition: getting to know each other as a basis for expanded peer exchange, e.g., through professional exchange trips

Participation and contact

If you would like to participate in the learning process, please send us an email by 15 October 2025, with details about your municipality or organization, your role, and a brief description of the project or challenge you would like to present to the other participants. For further information, please download the Call for particpation [pdf, 2 pages].

Summary and Outlook event about “Sustainability reporting and Voluntary Local Review”

In December 2024, representatives from local government associations and municipalities worldwide gathered in Berlin for a dialogue event on Sustainability Reporting and Voluntary Local Review. The Voluntary Local Review (VLR) is a globally recognized, flexible reporting tool that helps cities track and showcase their contributions to the 2030 Agenda.

At the event, some participants agreed to establish an open, low-threshold network titled Acceleration and Implementation of Voluntary Local and Subnational Reviews. Its main purpose is to create a platform for exchange among sustainability reporting experts – where members can present working approaches, share new results, and inspire one another with innovative practices. The group convenes regularly online, with speakers presenting their projects, challenges, and open questions on localizing the SDGs to a community of experts from diverse cities and local government associations.

On 25 September 2025, at 3 p.m. (CEST), representatives of local government associations and municipalities will meet again online to discuss further success stories and their insights.

Representatives of the City of Lusaka and the Local Government Association in Zambia will present the process of drafting their VLR. Thanks to the support of UN-ECA and UN-Habitat, the Lusaka City Council not only took stack of their SDG development, they also raised awareness about the SDGs on the local population.

Whereas the colleagues from Zambia will present the process of developing a VLR, a representative of the City of Niš will present their urban transition projects that followed the release of the VLR. Guided by the motto Releasing the VLR is not the end, but the beginning of a city’s transition, concrete projects will be presented, such as:

  • The implementation of a urban planning monitoring system of SDG-related data
  • New projects on urban connectivity and green infrastructure
  • The development and awareness within the municipal administration

Following the presentations, an open group discussion will explore past and upcoming activities. With SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) as one of the focus SDGs for the High-Level Political Forum 2026, this will be a key opportunity to collect and reflect on crucial activities for SDG localization in the year ahead.

The event will be held in English. If you wish to take part, please register through the online registration link.

Crisis Management

Crisis management tools support staff in the public health services to ensure that the authorities are able to continue functioning in biological emergencies. As a rule, normal administrative structures cannot cope with the challenges that arise in a crisis. Information and communications management for example must be adapted if it is to cope with increased demands. If sufficient specialist personnel are not available, competences have to be pooled and provided from a more central point. This textbook is designed to provide employees of public health offices, as well as other public health institutions, with pointers on how to systematically prepare themselves for preventing hazards in case of crisis, and familiarise them with the basics of crisis management. As well as covering specialised aspects, the textbook also provides recommendations in particular on operational planning and working in teams. It is supplemented with checklists designed and established in practise to serve as practical tools.
