Web seminar held February 3rd from 11:45 to 14:30 (CET) was part of a series from the ongoing project “Research of good practices and moderation of virtual events on the subject of health, business and governance at municipal level in times of COVID-19.” It brought together approximately 40 municipal representatives and 10 experts from all around the world in an attempt to identify good practices in health responses employed amid the pandemic. Representatives from Austria, Azerbaijan, Armenia, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Germany, Moldova, Montenegro, Slovenia, Serbia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan and North Macedonia have gathered to discuss local insufficiencies and shortcomings of health sector during the pandemic.
Findings of research on challenges and solutions implemented in network cities in the health sector were presented, as well as specific cases of municipal responses to COVID-19 in healthcare from Chisinau (Moldova) and Bogota (Colombia) were brought to attention of attendees. During the event participants had a valuable opportunity to discuss specific cases, share their own insights on the topic, and lay out the framework for future cooperation. The event ended with an active panel discussion between municipal representatives and field experts on the topic of COVID-19 vaccination and the challenges of combating the misinformed anti-vaxxer movement. The participants reviewed how cities might plan their vaccination process and elaborate corresponding communication strategies in order to ensure the vaccination of a sufficient proportion of the population.

There is a lack of knowledge in participatory urban planning and design, particularly in involving vulnerable groups in urban development processes. Research has shown that participatory urban development with girls and young women, local actors, as well as multi-level decision-makers, creates opportunities for more inclusive, equal and sustainable urban development.
Thus, Her City provides an opportunity to build capacity on a larger scale. Her City provides municipal professionals, urban actors and local decision-makers with a solid toolbox for mainstreaming youth, gender and socioeconomic perspectives by strategically involving girls and young women in urban planning and design.
Her City’s ambition is to contribute to a range of the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG3 on health and well-being, SDG5 on gender equality, SDG10 on reducing inequality, SDG11 on sustainable cities and communities, SDG16 on peace, justice and strong institutions and SDG17 on partnerships. However, previous experiences have shown that this approach also contributes to implementing other SDGs on the local level.
Smaller businesses in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, have been particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Eager to assist them, the city launched a project to help its businesses (‘Gmünd hilft seiner Wirtschaft’). Its main objective is to provide fast-track and unbureaucratic support to see enterprises through a liquidity bottleneck.

For years now, the Bremen-based wastewater utility company hanseWasser has been investing in efficient crisis and emergency management. Now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, its preparedness is paying off. The company is able to adapt its operations quickly and efficiently in line with new demands.
With the spread of the coronavirus, it is becoming increasingly clear that good crisis management is crucial. How do I meet the challenges posed by exceptional incidents? How do I organise a crisis team and how does good crisis management actually work?
These questions will be addressed in the new self-learning online course “Crisis Management” organized by Connective Cities on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) together with the Academy for Public Health Düsseldorf.
Participants gain an understanding of the most important basics, methods and principles for preparing for smaller and larger crises. The focus is on crisis management for health care institutions and public administration.
